Makenzie Schurk finds connection through clubs and clothing

From a young age Makenzie Schurk was passionate about people and fashion.

“I loved to be the center of attention,” she said. “I remember when I was younger I used to wear this cheetah outfit with fur boots, and that’s when I knew I wanted to do fashion.”

Makenzie started her path toward a career in fashion in high school with an internship at a local boutique. She enjoyed the personal relationships that she developed with customers through clothing.

“Most of my customers would be regulars, so I would know them and know their style,” she said. “Just getting to know people is really important.”

After graduating from high school, Makenzie decided to pursue fashion at Iowa State by majoring in apparel, merchandising, and design. She dreams of one day working as a celebrity stylist, or running a wholesale showroom.

“I think one of the things that keeps me going is to prove that I can make a career out of fashion,” Makenzie said.

In the mean time, Makenzie uses her club involvement at Iowa State as a space to practice her leadership and networking skills. When she initially came to Iowa State, Makenzie was involved with clubs that directly related to her major. However, she quickly began looking for other involvement and leadership opportunities in a wide variety of clubs.

“I wanted to branch out and meet new people,” she said. “I try and make connections and find things in common and help people connect. I’m a people person.”

While Makenzie is only a sophomore at Iowa State, she already serves in multiple leadership positions on campus. She balances serving as the vice president of ISU After Dark, president of programming for Sigma Kappa, and is a College of Human Sciences Ambassador.

“It’s worth it,” Makenzie said regarding how busy she is with all of her involvements. “It will all help me out in the long run.”
