Kaelyn Swartout aspires to make an impact helping children as a child life specialist after graduation. When she isn't building her knowledge for her future career, she enjoys watching Grey's Anatomy, hanging out with her friends, and staying involved in her sorority.
Kaelyn Swartout looks forward to future as child life specialist
Working with children during various opportunities throughout her life sparked Kaelyn’s passion.
“After taking courses like HDFS 102 and Psych 230, I found that the development of children was something that I found extremely interesting,” she said. “Pairing that with the fact that I wanted to help children makes a degree in child, adult, and family services the perfect career path for me.”
Kaelyn is now on the path of becoming a future child life specialist. Due to personal family experience, Kaelyn feels compelled to help children and their families during their hospital stays.
“I will be working closely with children and families going through big and small procedures,” she said. “My job will be explaining to them in terms they can understand what is happening and help them through the process.”
Many of Kaelyn’s classes focus on parenting styles and how to interact with different types of families.
“By knowing how to look at a family’s needs and being able to give parents sources on how to help, I will be prepared for speaking with families in the future,” she said.
Kaelyn knows going to the doctor isn’t easy and looks forward to being another support system.
“All families go through big things and shouldn’t be expected to know how to handle it every time,” she said. “I want to be there to make it easier for the parents and the children.”
While Kaelyn now has a direct career path, she is still keeping her options open by taking classes in various areas. She encourages other students to do the same.
“Take a lot of different classes,” she said. “Don’t be set on one specific idea. There are so many opportunities and doors. Don’t limit yourself.”
