Gabrielle Evans finds joy in serving others

Gabrielle has always wanted to work in a career where she could help others.

While volunteering at a community meal with her mom, Gabrielle saw first hand how the hospitality industry could change people’s lives. A visit to Iowa State University and a meeting with  professor Bob Bosselman solidified her choice of majoring in Event Management and Hospitality Management.

“When I was a junior in high school I came for an event management tour,” she said. “He (Bob Bosselman) was explaining what event management was. He’s really passionate, and it showed me that he really cared about the program and the students.”

That care for students is something that Gabrielle has continued to experience throughout her time at Iowa State.

“My adviser is Liz Harris, and she’s absolutely amazing,” Gabrielle said. “I can go in there in a total panic, and she actually genuinely cares about how my school life and work life is going. All of the professors are super supportive. They want to be flexible and let you do what you want to do.”

Gabrielle has taken full advantage of that flexibility by pursuing multiple opportunities outside of her studies. Outside of club involvement, Gabrielle has worked as a food waste research assistant, an event intern at Prairie Moon Winery, and event staff at the ISU Alumni Center.

All of these experiences have helped shape her career goals, and she hopes to one day work on the catering side of event planning, ideally for a meeting or convention center where she could work with meetings and trade shows.

“I hate weddings,” she said. “They’re so stressful. Trade shows are super interesting. There’s a lot going on at one time, and they require a lot of planning.”

Although working in event management can be stressful, Gabrielle still finds it rewarding.

“I really like helping people and serving people,” Gabrielle said.
