Brittany Bullock plans to become a pharmacist in the future. When she isn't studying, Brittany enjoys reading, watching Netflix, and spending time with friends.
Brittany Bullock combines pharmaceuticals, nutrition to promote health and well-being
Brittany Bullock’s mother is a pharmacist, and though Brittany was interested in entering the medical field, she had no intention of following in her mother’s footsteps — until she realized how fascinating the pharmaceutical world was to her.
“I’ve always been interested in science and the medical field,” Brittany said. “As I got older and started asking [my mom] questions, she would explain what pharmacists were doing, and it was really cool.”
After Brittany warmed up to the idea of becoming a pharmacist, she dove right in to the profession. Her senior year of high school, Brittany began working as a pharmacy technician in her local Hy-Vee pharmacy. This job set the foundation for her future professional and academic career.
Brittany is preparing for her graduate pharmacy studies by majoring in nutritional science at Iowa State University. Focusing on the food aspect of human health has opened Brittany’s eyes to a unique perspective on how to improve people’s well-being, while meeting her prerequisite requirements for graduate school.
“Nutrition and medicine go hand in hand,” she said. “If you don’t have the proper nutrients, that will affect how you digest and metabolize drugs.”
Brittany’s interest in nutrition, and the friends she made in her classes, led her to volunteer in Students Helping Our Peers (The SHOP), Iowa State’s student-run campus food pantry. Knowing that nutrition affects the body’s absorption of medicine and overall health, Brittany was inspired to help students on campus dealing with food insecurity.
“[The SHOP] really opened my eyes. I hadn’t understood food insecurity before, and I saw that there are people like me that are food insecure,” she said. “It made me really passionate about it.”
As Brittany nears her goal of attending pharmacy school, she knows that she made the right choice by taking a less common path to achieve it.
“I knew that by coming [to Iowa State] I was really going to learn what I need to know,” Brittany said. “But the best part was getting to know people here — I feel like I got to know great people.”
