An Iowa State University assistant professor of education who studies the experiences of graduate students has been cited as a 2019 Emerging Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. Brian Burt, who researches institutional policies and practices that influence students’ educational and workforce pathways, is one of 15 scholars recognized as representing "the very best of the U.S. academy" from among hundreds of nominees all working toward a more equitable and just society. Burt is featured on the magazine’s cover as well as page 16.
With major funding from the National Science Foundation, Burt’s work to understand and improve the experiences of Black men in STEM graduate programs is among the most comprehensive studies of Black men in engineering.
He credits the Iowa State University School of Education for its focus on scholarship that spotlights equity, diversity, and inclusion — and for supporting his work groom the next generation of education scholars.
