Overall my experience abroad was great! It was such a great opportunity to explore different cultures and lifestyles of other people not only in the industry but in their social life as well. We visited Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The things I got to do were not only fun, but also great learning experiences.
I learned about it when Grit, the faculty leader, came around from class to class, and then started talking about it with other students that had previously gone on the trip and learned more through them.
An impact to my life...
This trip gave me confidence that the goalsI have set for myself might seem difficult but are more possible than some might think. It has also taught me to take things one step at a time and reassured me that in doing so, everything will still fall into place and be okay. Getting to see the different cultures also opened my eyes to different things I can do in my designs and has kept me focused on where I truly want to go in life.
My most valuable learning experience...
Definitely getting to speak with an ISU alumni in Paris. She talked all about her experience throughout college and then post grad to where she is now. It was cool to get to hear that and gave me a sense of comfort knowing that other people didn't find their way right away and are still successful. It also opened my eyes on some different opportunities I didn't even know existed!
I will never forget...
I will never forget the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Getting to see the work he created right in front of me was truly one of the best moments of my life. We got to see his work space and I learned so many different facts about him that I had no idea about. I would go back a million more times.
A surprising discovery...
I was surprised with just how unbothered everyone was there. I knew Europe was going to be more accepting and open but I had no idea just HOW much. It was great getting to feel like I was okay however I looked or whatever I did that may be controversial in the states. It really won't change my perspective on life but it should definitely change other peoples.
Advice for others...
Keep an open mind! You may not always want to do exactly what is being done but if you keep a positive attitude you will love every second of it! It is such a cool opportunity. Also pack good shoes.
