Human Sciences Week

October 2 - 6, 2017

Human Sciences Week is a time for the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences to celebrate its unique, innovative, people-oriented programs and rich traditions with food, dance, speakers, and philanthropic events.

The week showcases the college’s commitment to expand human potential and improve people’s lives through diversity and social responsibility, wellness, entrepreneurship, personal financial literacy, and STEM (science, technology, education, and mathematics) education. 

Monday

Free Fruit From SDA

When: 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Where: Lagomarcino Hall, LeBaron Hall, and Free Speech Zone
Description: Student Dietetics Association will be handing out free fruit and KIND bars around campus, promoting healthy eating, having breakfast, and the start of Human Sciences Week with HEALTHY EATING TIPS handouts.

Yoga & Yogurt

When: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Where: Central Campus
Description: ExerCYse is Medicine Club will collaborate with ISU Recreation Services to host yoga on Central Campus. There will be free yogurt after the event.

Button Meal

Bagels & Yogurt from Hy-Vee

Lunch & Learn Series

Study Abroad 101

Description: CHS International Programs Office staff would promote the cred-bearing student abroad experiences that will provide meaningful ways for students to benefit personally, academically, and professionally.

Faces of Human Scientists

Culinary Boot Camp

When: 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Where: 200 MacKay Hall
Description: Culinary Food Science Club in collaboration with ISU Dining will be coordinating a boot camp for students, faculty, and community to get cooking.

 

Tuesday

CHS Council Bags Tournament

When: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Where: South Lawn of MacKay Hall
Description: Get on the bracket! Human Sciences Student Council will coordinate a bags tournament for Food & Fun Fest. Participants must coordinate teams and compete for the grand prize. Students must use 1 ticket to play.

Food & Fun Fest

When: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Where: South Lawn of Mackay Hall
Description: The College of Human Sciences will provide a main dish and clubs will fill the entrees. Student clubs will be fundraising and promoting their event while having fun! With the button purchase, you receive 3 tickets to purchase things from clubs!

Pizza & Packing

When: 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Description: This is a philanthropy where Human Sciences students will help pack supplies for school teachers in King and Moulton Elementary. It Starts with Soap and ISU 4 U Promise will collaborate by collect supplies in local businesses, like the and Target. Students will pack care packages and write thank you notes to teachers. In between the shifts, pizza will be served.

 

Wednesday

Lunch & Learn Series

TREND Styling Session
When: 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Where: To be announced
Description: Fashion directors will explain their roles with TREND Magazine, their experiences with photoshoots, and give pointers regarding styling. Students will style someone with the various articles of clothing provided.

Study Abroad Fair

When: 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Where: LeBaron 1009
Description: Faculty members will be available to talk about the study abroad opportunities they are leading, College of Human Sciences International Programs Office staff members will be available to answer general questions about studying abroad, and students will circulate among tables and discuss opportunities.

Student Wellness Gazebo

When: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Description: Student Wellness Center has a traveling gazebo where their peer wellness educators and students are able to interact and ask questions.

Research Symposium

Description: Faculty and Students will share their research through a poster display

CHS Multicultural Networking Dinner

When: 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m
Where: Joan Bice Tea Room
Description: Connect Four and CHS Office of Multicultural Affairs will host a dinner to bring Multicultural and International students, Faculty and Staff in the CHS together. The dinner will include connection activities, Q&A sessions and an opportunity for all participants to network with faculty and staff in their future career fields and research areas.

Nitrogen Ice Cream Demonstration

When: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m
Where: 210 MacKay Hall
Description: Food Science club will be showing the delicious side of the science behind ice cream making.

 Brain Blurbs: Exploring “The Golden Touch” of Neuroscience on Human Health

Description: Graduate students of the neuroscience program will give a brief presentation about how their research in neuroscience benefits brain health and society.

ExerCYse is Medicine

Description: Kinesiology professor Dr. Paddy Ekkekakis will be interactively explaining the benefits of exercise and practical ways that someone could gain those benefits. Touching lives through education about exercise!

Alumni Social

Movie on Central

Description: The SLT will coordinate a Throwback film on Central Campus for students, staff, and faculty. Popcorn and drinks will be served. Movie to be determined.

S.H.O.P Hunger Games

Description: Throughout the week S.H.O.P would gather donations for the S.H.O.P. At the breakfast, teams of 4 will join together before the event. They will have limited time to gather donations for their team to use and work together to create a can sculpture. They will be judged by students, faculty, and staff at the event.

Spirit Day Walk for United Way

When: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Description: Faculty and staff can pay $1 to wear jeans on Friday and participate in the walk for United Way. Students and faculty are encouraged to wear “their colors” representing their department.

Pie in the Face

Description: CHS Student Council will be doing a week-long competition for which professor will be pied. Student Sensations get to pie their respective “favorite” professor if they raise the most money for United Way. Jars will be around campus to raise money.
