1970s Annual Bike Race
In the early 1970s there was an annual bike race around central campus. Untrained contestants on borrowed bikes took turns sprinting around the track, inflicting damage to bikes, knees and spectators. For all the misery of the day, it was a memorable event that we foolishly did every year. This taught me that humans will voluntarily damage themselves in an effort involving competition and comradery.
