I was responsible for...
In this position, I worked directly under the Volunteer Coordinator for Public Safety and Disaster. During the course of this internship I was able to gain valuable experience in organization, time management, collaboration with partner agencies, and event planning. I was able to assist in the organization and planning for the following events: -The Volunteer Reception Center, VRC, drills in three locations in Story County: Ames, Nevada, and Story City. The VRC is activated by an appointed official in the event of a disaster/emergency or a missing/abducted child. The drills are done to keep volunteers engaged and comfortable with the procedures at each station of the VRC. I prepared the materials for each locations drill as well as updated all documents. -The "Forging a New Partnership: Law Enforcement and Volunteers" training in collaboration with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Story County Sheriff's Office, and Central Iowa RSVP. This event was created to show other agencies across the state of Iowa the procedures Story County has established with law enforcement and volunteer centers to more efficiently manage volunteers, allowing law enforcement to focus on searching for the missing/abducted person. I contacted participants, dmanaged the registration, created and distributed packets for the day of the event, and assisted in coordinating a follow-up email to the 50 participants containing all of the information from the days presentations. -"Spring Fury: Community Preparedness... Are We Ready?" This event was created by the Story County Coalition for Disaster Recovery. This is a community preparedness event open to the public, but has a focus on children and persons with functional and access needs. The event had three presentations, The Pillowcase Project presentation for kids, and many community agencies present at booths.
My most valuable effort...
I gained a lot of experience from planning Spring Fury. I was one of the main planners for this community preparedness event. I developed my skills in communicating with other professionals while coordinating with vendors and presenters.
I will never forget...
I truly enjoyed working with our partner agencies. Specifically, the Story County Sheriff's Office. I was able to develop a great relationship with the officers I worked with in planning the event "Forging a New Partnership: Law Enforcement and Volunteers."
A surprising discovery...
I was surprised how much I was interested in the work I was doing throughout my internship. I felt that this was the type of work I would really enjoy after graduation.
Advice for others...
Take every opportunity you are given. I found this internship through a co-worker at Fareway. She is a volunteer with RSVP and thought I would be interested in meeting with the coordinator, Betty. After meeting with Betty I was offered the internship and it has truly been a memorable experience.
I first learned about this career-building experience from...
Through a co-worker at my part time job at Fareway in Nevada, IA.
I landed this assignment by...
I meet with Betty, we had a very relaxed conversation and she offered me the internship.
I wanted this experience because...
I have never been interested in working in corporate wellness, so I was looking for any internship not related to that.
