I was responsible for...
The main responsibilities for me at the YMCA included; working the front desk where I checked people in and helped answer any questions they had about the facility, clean and maintain equipment, lead group fitness sessions, lead personal training sessions, help with facility fitness programs like the Live strong program for cancer patients.
My greatest accomplishment from my experience was being given the chance to make a personal training handbook for the facility. The handbook outlined everything that a new personal trainer needs to know to help them have a successful onboarding to the YMCA.
The first lesson that I learned during my experience would be that you can have all the knowledge in the world about fitness, but if you cant coach and motivate people to make changes, you will never be able to get your message across. It took me a couple sessions with clients to get fully comfortable with my motivational coaching but when it did, everything fell into place. The second big lesson I learned was that in the personal training business, you have to be your own businessman. Through words from a wise trainer, I was able to get insights on how he has gotten so many clients and retained them. Teaching me many things throughout my internship. it has lead me to become a better trainer and person in general.
Advice for others...
My advice to you would be to get out there and get involved with a gym and start making connections early, even in college. This will only benefit you and help you learn things that will put you a step ahead of the competition.
