I was responsible for...
I have several responsibilities this summer. I helped with hiring and training our 18-summer staff, who run our two desks. I work personally with each of my conference sponsors and arrange for appropriate staffing at the desks, check-ins, live-in staff, etc. when they are here. I also arrange room assignments, building access, dining access, billing, and emergency responses for each of my conferences. Along with my conference responsibilities, I have my own leads that I'm in charge of. These are desk supervision, cash handling, and key lead. I also rotate with the other Conference Managers being on-call. So, I have a work cell phone that anyone can call if there is a question.
The biggest conference that I was in charge of was 4-H Youth Conference. They had just over 650 participants and they were here for 5 days. I assigned each one of them rooms and coordinated with the sponsor for every detail.
The great lesson I have learned is how many people it takes to put something on. Besides working with just the conference sponsor, you have to coordinate with your staff to make sure everyone is on the same page. You also contact custodial and maintenance to make sure every is ready and also dining. Also, the service center with any special request for your group. Just making sure everyone is in the know, makes everything run more smoothly.
Advice for others...
My advice to future students would be not to shy away from a job that gives you a lot of responsibilities. I have learned so much from this internship, that will benefit every job I have after it, because I have been given so much responsibility.
