I was responsible for...
Assist with the implementation and evaluation of physical fitness assessments for residents using the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Senior Fitness Test protocol Teach daily strength, balance and aquatic classes Lead new member fitness orientations and provide health coaching to individuals Create marketing materials to promote programs (i.e. newsletters, flyers, etc.) Plan, implement and evaluate one large event (i.e. Health Fair, Community Walk, Presentation) Attend trips with residents and participate in social events on campus Lead new member orientation for employees and family members Create monthly marketing materials to promote programs Help design and implement education and/or incentive programs Teach employee group fitness classes Work with other departments within WesleyLife Understand the dynamics of a retirement community Learn how to operate a fitness center (i.e. policy, marketing, evaluation) Gain a broad understanding of the role of wellness within an organization
My greatest accomplishment would be the experience I received leading large group activities and communicating at a professional level. I am more comfortable leading residents through fitness assessments and presenting in front of an audience.
Age is just a number and not a limitation. The greatest lesson I have learned from my experience interning at Edgewater would be that there is so much to look forward to in life and that our greatest memories happen later on in life. Don't let your age hold you back from making experiences.
Advice for others...
Go out and experience a new type of learning environment. Don't settle for what you might think to be the most exciting but instead try something that will be the most rewarding. Don't be a square.
