I was responsible for...

I accomplished...
I was able to use the knowledge and diagnostic techniques learned during my internship to help my friend with his hip issues. I noticed that he was walking a little weird and therefore I enquired about any pain when he exercises and he said that he has issues with his left hip. I made the recommendation that his lack of ankle dorsiflexion forces hip to externally rotate his right hip out in order to get his leg in front of him. A compensation for this movement is a lot of weight shift, hip tilt and rotation. In order to stabilize this excessive motion, his left tensor fascia lata has taken over the stabilizing roll and is therefore tight, annoyed and inflamed. I recommended that an improvement in his right ankle dorsiflexion would be the key to improving his gait. My friend went to a physical therapist and was told a very similar narrative. I was excited to hear that I am starting to think about the body in the right way and that I was able to connect the dots.

I learned...
1 - Scientific literature is always changing and adapting to the latest research. Being a qualified health-care professional is not an end destination, it is a platform for you to continue learning and growing while caring for society. Every day is a school day. The more you know, the more you realize you don't know. 2 - Having the knowledge and procedures to be a great health care practitioner is only half the battle. The great service providers have the knowledge and credentials BUT they also have fantastic people skills that make them easy to work with. Being friendly, honest, open and professional go a long way towards making a service provider great. 3 - Enjoyment with the job increases attention, retention and adherence. Being able to find little victories during the day and having a good sense of humor makes everyones experience that much better.

Advice for others...
Be the entrepreneur of your own journey. Go in to your experience ready to learn; ask questions, initiate discussions, promote your own ideas/thoughts and be willing to be challenged so that you can learn. Every day is a school day, be open and receptive to learning - it will make a huge difference.
