I was responsible for...
As an intern with UnityPoint Wellness Services Department, I was responsible for tasks conducted in both areas of Employee Wellness and Corporate Wellness. The Employee Wellness related responsibilities included managing fitness center orientations and memberships, coaching employees through the Metabolic Syndrome Program, conducting fitness evaluations and consultations, updating bulletin boards, leading a Lunch N' Learn, and facilitating various group exercise classes. Through Corporate Wellness, my responsibilities included working with various external companies to perform health screenings and consultations in which participants received blood profile, blood pressure, body composition, waist circumference, and resting heart rate measurements. I also took part in helping at numerous community blood profiling events, and helped facilitate an AED/CPR certification course.

I accomplished...
Through this internship, I have gained a lot of experience working within the field of health and wellness. Although I have always been passionate about pursing additional education in nursing, I feel as though this internship gave me an excellent idea for what it is like to work in 'the real world'. The internship experience gave me several opportunities to job shadow within UnityPoint Hospitals, which has ultimately reconfirmed my aspirations to attend nursing school.

I will never forget...
My most memorable experience from this internship was the day that the other intern and I gave our Lunch N' Learn presentation. We had spent weeks preparing a formal presentation and had practiced our lines over and over. Both of us were really nervous and were looking forward to being done with our presentation. When it came time to present, we were shocked at the number of employees who had come to listen to us speak. We both took a deep breath and relaxed as we talked through our presentation, just as we had practiced. The event went so well that numerous employees came up to us afterwards asking if we would come present our topic to their individual departments. Not only did this experience enhance our confidence and presentation skills, but it also taught us about the health benefits that laughter can have on the human body.

Advice for others...
I would not have found out about this internship opportunity if I had not called the main telephone number on several times.. I had originally called and left a voicemail asking about internship opportunities and it took 3 times until I was finally connected with Wellness Services. My best advice would be to reach out to any company in which you are interested in. Do some background research and make a phone call. I think it is important to 'put yourself out there' in order for you to gain experience and make connections. Always use what you have and form relationships! Networking definitely helps!
