I was responsible for...
Processing and sorting donations to the food pantry, entering food pantry files into computer system, answering phones and greeting families that visited the center, shadowed home visits with family development specialists, organized and entered files into computer systems for new fiscal year.
I did the first ever inventory for the food pantry and worked out a spreadsheet to track future inventory in to see trends in what kinds of donations we receive as well as seeing what we run low or out of. The spreadsheet also shows the quantities we need of food that can be ordered from the Food Bank of Iowa. I also met a lot of great people, including a woman who broke down in tears overwhelmed with compassion and help she received, which felt really good.
I learned how to open up and make small talk with families while they waited in the lobby. I also got a better sense of what I do and don't like in this field of work which will better prepare me for a career in the future.
Advice for others...
Push yourself out of your normal comfort zone and ask lots of questions of everyone you work with.
