I was responsible for...
I interned with the Bureau of Oral and Health Delivery Systems. I worked under the dental director, two executive officers, and a community health consultant. My duties included: attending Lifelong Smiles Coalition meetings, I-Smile Silver Coordinator meetings, I-Smile Coordinator meetings, participate in Oral and Health Delivery Systems Bureau meetings, complete tasks assigned by executive officers (redesigning coordinator handbooks, create instructions for social media campaigns, review Request for Approvals (RFAs), review and provide feedback for program advertisements), and attend orientation meetings with colleagues in other bureaus within the department.
My greatest accomplishment was getting to be involved in the social media campaign for Older Americans Month (May) administered by the Lifelong Smiles Coalition. I was asked to prepare detailed instructions to be handed out to agencies participating in the campaign. The campaign only reached a little over 3000 last year, this year over 30,000 individuals participated.
I have learned that confidence is key, creating partnerships and developing networking skills are essential, and you must learn to go with the flow, especially while dealing with the government.
Advice for others...
View every experience as a learning opportunity. Don't be afraid to put yourself in difficult situations, those are the best learning opportunities. Also, use criticism and feedback as a tool to help you grow as a working professional.
