I was responsible for...
My responsibilities included directing the warm up, stretching, and monitoring vitals (heart rate and blood pressure) during Phase III Cardiac Rehab Exercise classes (Fit 4 Life). I also assisted in Phase II Cardiac Rehab duties including: prepping patients and hooking them up to a 3-Lead EKG monitoring system, directing the warm up and stretching, and monitoring vitals before, during, and after exercise. Two days a week, I prepared resistance exercise prescriptions and conducted Women on Weights classes. I had the option to do two public speaking presentations on behalf of story Medical, and presented those at the local Kiwanis and Rotary. Lastly, I took care of office work which included logging attendance, logging patient summaries for Cardiac Rehab into their charts, and any other little office work needed.

I accomplished...
I had many accomplishments during my internship! I learned the value of getting to know each client/patient personally. I got more practice learning how to adapt exercise prescriptions to each individual's need. I learned how to come up with resistance circuits on the spot. I was happy to learn how to take blood pressures very quickly and effectively, even while the patient was exercising on loud, moving equipment. I observed and learned the logic behind progressing patients through Cardiac Rehab sessions regarding their workout intensities for each session. I also had the opportunity to practice my public speaking through my two presentations, and learned that public speaking is something I am good at and enjoy!

I learned...
The greatest lesson I learned from my experience was the importance of getting to know all my clients. Because of the nature of the classes, most of my clients and patients were senior citizens. It was so fun getting to know them and hear stories from their lives. It was so rewarding to see how these exercises classes were helping them through hardships and keeping them healthy. They truly enjoyed coming to class every day and seeing each other, myself and my supervisor, and I truly enjoyed working with them.

Advice for others...
Be open to learning new things, even if they aren't necessarily things that you thought you would like. Also, don't be afraid to step up and take charge of your job.
