I was responsible for...
Supervising and monitoring members utilizing fitness center Perform ergonomic assessments for proper workstation set up and assessed physical issues employees were experiencing Performing health and fitness assessments, determining exercise prescriptions, and designing programs for a diverse population, including a variety of high risk clientele Providing one-on-one consulting, training, and motivation Design & Implementation of incentive, health promotion, and other specialty programs Instruction of group exercise classes Performing administrative tasks associated with facility operations. Create wellness programming with the Program Manager to implement at all Discover locations in the nation to promote physical activity

I accomplished...
Created and implemented Wellness Wednesday program to encourage employees to implement healthy practices into their workday. Aided the development of a physical activity wellness campaign for members and employees not affiliated with the fitness center for all five Discover Medifit locations Created exercise and stretching programs for employees that has a focused health goal Improved the ergonomic education and assessments for staff at Medifit and for the Discover employees to decrease uncomfortable and painful workstation set ups

My most valuable effort...
The project I felt most valuable was the overall Wellness Wednesday program that lasted from the middle of May and will continue throughout August. This program was the most valuable to my time with Medifit because it encompassed multiple parts of wellness instead of only exercise. The program included a subsidized healthy lunch option in the cafeteria, hydration stations with fruit infused water, free fitness center access, a 5K on one of the initial weeks of the program.

I learned...
Being in the health industry you need to keep your demeanor friendly but professional even when you become comfortable with the people you are working with.

I will never forget...
The most memorable experience I will take from my time at my internship is the rec league I helped organize and manage, as well as participate on a team. My teammates are all in their 20’s which made for us to have a lot of fun and be very competitive. I have even continued to join other intramural leagues throughout the Chicago area with the same group of people.

A surprising discovery...
I didn’t expect to love instructing group exercise and consulting the members through difficult workouts. After seeing the members love their results and become confident I have decided to get my personal training certification to be able to train on the side throughout my career and potentially become a certified health coach.

Advice for others...
While you have the opportunity, get additional certifications while you have the time during your undergraduate time. Whether it be a group exercise certification or an occupational safety certification it will help you stand out among other candidates when applying for full time positions. Also always go above and beyond in your internships and other related experience positions. Your supervisors are your first reference or contact that companies will contact to learn more about you.

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I had been researching many internship opportunities around the big cities in the Midwest and came across it online.

I landed this assignment by...
I applied through the Medifit EXOS website for their internship and was offered a phone interview in the following weeks. After the phone interview I was given the opportunity to interview in person at the Discover location in Riverwoods, IL. I was extended the position a couple days later.

I wanted this experience because...
Before this position I had a previous internship that focused a great deal on wellness and health in the corporate setting and absolutely loved it. I wanted to continue getting more experience in this area so I could eventually get a position in corporate wellness upon graduation. This assignment was also at a very innovative company so I looked forward to seeing a new perspective of wellness since their program only began a few years ago at Discover Financial Services.
