I was responsible for...
During my experience at Blank Children's Hospital, my responsibilities consisted of assisting with planning and coordinating the World's Largest Swimming Lesson, actively participating in Safe Kids of Greater Des Moines initiative which included attending coalition meetings, event planning and entering data. I also helped plan Clowns at the Carousel event and held exhibits at health fairs and community outreach events.

I accomplished...
Some of my accomplishments during my internship were successfully coordinating the World's Largest Swimming Lesson by ensuring that all participants were registered and that a witness was present. Another accomplishment was how well I retained a lot of the car seat installment lessons that were taught to me throughout each installment/appointment.

My most valuable effort...
The most valuable project that I worked on was the World's Largest Swimming Lesson. Before learning that I was going to be helping coordinate such important event, I had no idea that it even existed. Getting to learn what it was all about, how it was not only helping raise drowning and prevention awareness, but It was also helping parents and children realize why taking swimming lessons at a young age is really important.

I learned...
The most valuable experience was getting to learn how to properly install a car seat. In the near future not only could It come handy for my own personal use, but it could potentially become an area in which I might want to become a car seat technician and help parents/caregivers install a car seat properly. I know of many parents who do not know what a properly installed car seat looks like, not knowing that there are services that can help change that. It is great to have been able to learn all the proper techniques so that I can potentially save a child's life.

I will never forget...
The most memorable experience that I have from the experience installing car seats was when a grandfather came to ensure that the car seat he had was big enough and installed properly for his grandson who was coming to visit for the weekend. I thought it was the most precious thing to watch a grandfather be so worried about whether the car seat was still in good condition so that his grandson would be safe while riding in his car.

Advice for others...
Some advice that I would give to other students who might follow in my footsteps would be to ask your supervisors a lot of questions while you are an intern. In the Advocacy and Outreach department there was a lot of opportunities in which you were allowed to engage in all different types of activities, showing you what each individuals role was in the department. My advice is for the intern to accept any opportunity that may be presented to them because it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
