I was responsible for...
I was a full time sales associate, working on the floor helping customers. Filling and tidying up the store was also a big part of my job. When the customers shop from the floor, I was to get the products from sides stock and put them back to their correct location. I also learned how to merchandise through many Summer and Fall setups.
I really enjoyed switching the store from season to season. With doing this, I learned the process of visual merchandising a large area. We stayed late at the store as well as went there very early so that the store wasn't cluttered for opening time. This process was a great opportunity to learn why products go in certain areas, how you decide where categories are placed around the store, and where you place colors and organize the products to look right.
I have learned that being a store manager is something that I don't want to do but that I am also very interested in visual merchandising. I also earned a great respect for those who work mall hours, especially managers because of the difficult hours and long days.
Advice for others...
I would really recommend this internship for those interested in working at Pottery Barn as a manager or on the design studio specialist team. The people that work there are great and they allow you to learn what you're most interested in.
