Title: Health and Safety Wellness Intern
Timeframe: Spring 2017
Advisor/Coordinator Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
I was responsible for...
The Health and Safety Wellness Intern is responsible for collaborating and assisting the Iowa DOT Wellness Team with special wellness events and challenges, assisting with health and safety team projects, maintain the internal wellness website, researching wellness best practices and communicating them with employees, and assisting with the Workers' Compensation program.
My greatest accomplishment from this internship is creating the 2017 Wellness Calendar. Using the topics from the calendar, I was able to compose and distribute wellness newsletters to all employees.
I think the greatest lesson I learned from this experience was the importance of lifetime learning. Being the Health and Safety Wellness Intern, I had the opportunity to work with many different professionals. I gained first hand experience on what it means to constantly be innovative. The men and women that work at the Iowa DOT are always striving towards improvement and innovation. Learning new things and being open to new experiences is vital in the work force.
Advice for others...
I would encourage future students to not be hesitant when confronted with responsibilities or tasks they are not expecting, whether that's in the internship search or actually during the internship. Even if a project isn't exactly applicable to your major, take that project on with confidence. You will be surprised at how much something outside of your comfort zone can impact you and how much you can learn from those experiences.
