I was responsible for...
I am an Empowerment and Young Mom Intern. I help facilitate groups for girls ages 10 to 21 in Des Moines public schools and our center. We host groups to educate young moms and provide them resources they need to be the best moms they can be. We also host empowerment groups which help young women learn to be strong, independent, and confident ladies.

I accomplished...
One of my greatest accomplishments is gaining the trust of the ladies I work with. I have slowly been learning that trust does not come naturally for all people and you have to build it. If it does not come right away, you cannot take it personally. If you can build a relationship which your client, it opens doors for helping them.

I learned...
I thought I was bias free when I entered this internship. I have since realized that I did have biases against some of the populations I've worked with, or a typical stereotype in my head. I have truly learned the lesson of "you can't judge a book by it's cover."

Advice for others...
Take risks. Talk to the people you are scared to talk to, and it's okay to fail. How you respond or come back is what is important.
