I was responsible for...
During these placements I was a student teacher for an elementary school in Houston Texas, and then a high school in Alexandra New Zealand. I was in charge of working with a cooperating teacher and other professionals during my time. I was able to create and implement my own instruction as well. I was given control of the classroom, and was allowed to handle the bulk of the curriculum.
The greatest accomplishment I had was successfully implementing an assessment tool that was fair and accurate for the students. I feel that creating assessment that is both fair and valid can be challenging for some teachers and schools. I was very happy when I was able to develop one for a gymnastics unit I was doing.
One thing that I learned over this experience is that every student learns differently. There are some students who do great in one-on-one instruction, and others who thrive in groups. Understanding and developing curriculum around this understanding is something that i realized was essential for good teaching. Understanding learner differentiation can be very challenging, but it has made me a better educator.
Advice for others...
My advice for future students would be to completely immerse yourself in the culture and area you are student teaching. Try to get as involved as you possibly can. The more you get involved, the more fun you will have, more you will get noticed and stand out, and the more rewarding it will feel. You have one shot at student teaching, and it's important to make the most of it. Step outside of your comfort zone.
