I was responsible for...
I am the High School Program intern. I assist the High School Coordinator with planning activities, transporting students to and from program, assisting with tutoring, and coordinating and serving the volunteers to encourage them. I also work with the middle school program when needed, and it is a lot of the same work with them.
My greatest accomplishment is building relationships with a lot of the students and getting to know them. When you have a strong relationship with them, they are more likely to see you as a leader of the group and listen to your direction more.
My greatest lesson I've learned from working with inner city teens is how to be patient, understanding and relate to them. They are teenagers, so they are full of energy and different personalities. But by creating an open, judgement-free zone for them to open up and be themselves in, they learn to trust you. And when you build strong relationships with them individually, they will in turn respect you and see you as a leader.
Advice for others...
I would challenge future students to get out of their comfort zones when it comes to picking an internship. All of my past experiences have been with young children, and working with adolescents made me really nervous because of their reputation. But I decided to stretch myself and see if I liked working with this group and turns out I really do enjoy it! Working with teenagers is really fun and meaningful work. So by stepping out of my comfort zone, I developed more professional skills, learned more about my own limits and capabilities, and found another possible career interest.
