I was responsible for...
At Foroige, my main responsibility was to supervise the after school drop in sessions at the Galway City Youth Cafe for students aged 12-18. During these "sessions" I occasionally taught drug education lessons and nutrition/physical health lessons. I also planned and lead two different weekly education programs for young people, one being on disability awareness and the other was overall health and wellness. I assisted with grant proposal writing and program evaluations for Foroige and another affiliate agency, Big Brother Big Sister. I was also in charge of volunteer coordination, correspondence, and assisted with training sessions for over 25 volunteers in the Youth Cafe.
I will never forget...
My most memorable experience was when I met my supervisor, Noel, on the first day of my internship and he handed me a key to the Youth Cafe and said "Okay, now you're in charge. Good luck." Right away I was given a large responsibility (with plenty of guidance) and felt like I was really making a contribution.
Advice for others...
Absolutely try to meet as many different people as you can, whether it's at your agency or in the community. There were countless times during my internship that I needed help with something and already had a personal relationship with whoever could help me. It made a huge difference in my experience and I know now that in my future in Public Health I already have resources I can count on!
I wanted this experience because...
I really wanted this internship for two reasons. The first, I wanted an opportunity to travel and I thought the experience I gained in a different country would help me gain valuable skills and perspectives. Which in the end it definitely has! Secondly, I am interested in pursuing health education. This internship gave me the opportunity to plan, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate different health education courses of my choice.
