I was responsible for...
My main responsibilities working with Iowa State Rec Services is to follow up with emails to patrons who rent or reserve our spaces. We ask what types of equipment, rooms, and services they will be needing during their event. During the event, we make ourselves available in case of any problems or questions. After the event, we send a survey and ask them to fill it out so we can receive feedback on how we did.
It's still early in my internship, but so far we have made a calendar that includes all the upcoming events and what we need to do for them. It's been helping a lot. We have also created surveys to send to our patrons after an event so we know how we're doing as staff at their event.
My most valuable effort...
I helped out at an event recently called Odyssey of the Minds that took place all over Iowa State's campus. I was placed at a "hot spot" where a lot of the event members would be stopping so they could ask me questions or directions. I know it wasn't a very glamorous job, but I felt it was an important position for that event. I liked helping the event members too. It taught me a lot about planning and how important it is to be organized especially when planning an event that huge!
I will never forget...
Odyssey of the Minds was a really fun and memorable experience because I was in charge of an entire building and staff just because I was working for an event. It was pretty busy and I worked long hours, but it was fun and there were a lot of people to network with!
Advice for others...
Start as soon as you can! I started working with events and planning after my freshman year and just kept going from there. It helps to narrow down what it is you like/dislike and what you want to do in the future.
I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I have been working for Recreation Services since my freshman year at Iowa State and I knew they had a event internship opportunity.
I landed this assignment by...
Since I was already an employee for Rec Services, they basically just did a quick interview to make sure I would be able to carry out the duties they'd need. My supervisors like to hire current employees because we are more familiar with the facilities and have a sense of what is going on without too much training.
I wanted this experience because...
I thought it would be a good experience and I wanted to learn more about planning and events at a gym on a large college campus.
