I was responsible for...
Here at Des Moines University I was responsible for some front desk coverage. I was in charge of creating and developing an incentive program for the university and its users. I kept the weight room and wellness center fairly cleaned up. I am a certified personal trainer, so I was able to gain and train some clients here at DMU. I helped with future wellness ideas with collaborating with the director here. My position as intern is unpaid, there is no money involved, but there is much knowledge to gain. I highly recommend this internship for anyone, as long as you are willing to be innovative and self-sustaining. Do not apply for this internship just to slide by.
My greatest achievement here would be creating and successfully running a 6 week incentive program here at DMU. Gaining so many connections is also a great accomplishment for me.
The greatest lesson i learned from my time here at DMU was that I don't know everything. I knew that coming in here, I know nobody knows everything, but i came in here with an open imagination and the intent to learn.
Advice for others...
I would say to future students that you should have an open mind. I am more on the training and fitness side of health, but wellness is definitely a great way to help people. It is less active and specific and hands on as personal training, but you will still be able to help people get better habits in their lives. If you do not think a lot of computer work and planning is for you, then wellness may not be for you. There is a lot of tech work that is done, like emails and writing documents, researching topics. It is not like a regular desk job though, there are definitely opportunities to get up and around. Here at DMU I was very active, so i was hardly ever bored.
