I was responsible for...
My responsibilities included; maintaining a clean and tidy clinic, providing ice and heat to patients, getting patients from the waiting room to start them on a machine to warm up, restocking therapy supplies, aiding therapists as needed, linens, and answering any questions or helping the fitness members with exercises and stretching.
My greatest accomplishment was successfully learning all the stages of rehab for many different types of injuries. I have gained a better understanding the physical therapy field in general. I feel much more prepared to attend PT school now after gaining experience during my internship.
The greatest lesson I learned from this experience is to try new areas of the practice. I have never observed at a hospital before. I was given the chance to do so at the hospital in Marshalltown. As it turns out, I did not enjoy the hospital setting at all. I have learned now that I do not want to do any inpatient hospital setting after I graduate from PT school.
Advice for others...
My advice for future students would be to try to gain the best experience you could possibly get at your internship. It is also very important to ask questions because it is a great way to learn. The therapists know why you are there and that is to learn so they were very happy to answer my questions. Another tip I would give is to make sure to tour and meet the therapists you will be interning for.
