I was responsible for...
The Symposium Planning Intern works one-on-one with the Director of Planning on the preparation and logistics leading up to the Laureate Announcement Ceremony, which takes place each year in Washington, D.C.; research issues related to food insecurity in preparation for the Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium in the Fall; other duties related to arrangements for the annual Borlaug Dialogue.
On a daily basis, the work I do contributes to a larger event. It's been so rewarding to see how writing letters and fine detail work make a difference on the day of the event. We recently announced the 2018 Laureates, and in October, we will present them the award along with an international symposium. I love knowing my daily efforts not only make a difference for these events but what they stand for. This year's symposium theme is Rise to the Challenge. I look forward to seeing how my work will encourage the dialogue between global leaders fighting food insecurity.
One of the greatest lessons learned is that details matter. There is a reason that many things are done, and it's best to understand why it's done that way. Then, suggested improvements are justified and no one is reinventing the wheel. Additionally, attendees may not realize the work being done, but the experience is definitely heightened because of all the differences that separate your event from others.
Advice for others...
I would accept work and tasks that may seem intimidating because they are outside of your skillset. It is an opportunity to learn more and expand your experience. You may also find an interest that you wouldn't have entertained if it weren't for an extra challenge.
