Directions

Ames, Iowa is the home of Iowa State University. Ames is located 35 miles north of Des Moines, 380 miles west of Chicago, 225 miles south of Minneapolis, and 160 miles east of Omaha.

By Car

If you are traveling to Ames via Interstate 35, take the exit labeled "Iowa State University/Highway 30" and go west on Highway 30 to the third Ames exit labeled "Elwood Drive/ISU." From there, proceed north on Elwood Drive past the Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field and the Iowa State Center to Lincoln Way Avenue. (You may want to stop at the Iowa State information booth, located along Elwood Drive, just past the large "Welcome to Ames" sign and just before Lincoln Way.) Follow Lincoln Way west (left turn) to campus. Parking is available in the Memorial Union ramp on Lincoln Way.

By Plane

If traveling by plane, you will probably fly into the Des Moines International Airport, which is served by several commercial airlines including American, Northwest, TWA, and United. Private planes may fly into the Ames Municipal Airport. Car rental and taxi service is available at both airports.

When you arrive at Des Moines International Airport, look for the AccessPlus (A+) terminal, a computerized information kiosk that provides instant access to Iowa State services. The AccessPlus terminal, located in the baggage area of the Des Moines International Airport, resembles an automatic teller machine. Its services are accessed with a user-friendly "touchscreen" system. The terminal offers: maps showing visitors how to get to Ames and the ISU campus, entry to ISU's World Wide Web homepage, telephone and fax access to some university departments, and a variety of other ISU information.
