Information for Students - FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Q. Will combining the two colleges change the wording on my diploma?
A. While the student’s major appears on her diploma, the name of her college does not. Therefore, the combination will not affect wording on diplomas.

Q. Under what college will I graduate?
A. Students in programs formerly listed in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences or the College of Education will graduate under the College of Human Sciences, beginning with the Summer 2005 commencement ceremony on August 6, 2005.

Q. Will combining the two colleges change the prestige of my degree?
A. The prestige of a particular degree rests primarily on the reputations of the institution of higher learning and the program that offers a particular major. Our programs will continue to be offered under the Iowa State University umbrella and academic departments will remain intact. Therefore, the combination will likely have no bearing on the prestige of our degrees. Graduates will continue to enjoy the esteemed reputation of those who hold diplomas from our programs.

Q. Will my coursework change?
A. The combination does not affect particular degree programs, courses of study, or the location of classes. Students will see little, if any, change in their daily coursework as a result of the combination.

Q. Will my advising system change?
A. At this time, no changes are planned for advising students. Those who have been serving as academic advisors will continue to do so and students will not be reassigned to difference advisors as a result of the combination.

Q. Will other student services change?
A. Our faculty and staff are making plans to improve service to students. Students will be able to tap some resources that previously were not available to them. For instance, students in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences will be able to consult an international programs coordinator in the new college to help them plan for study abroad, internships abroad and more. A career services coordinator will help them prepare for their profession. Students in the College of Education will benefit from the services provided by a recruitment and retention specialist.

Q. Will my academic department change?
A. All of the academic departments previously listed within the College of Education or the College of Family and Consumer Sciences will transfer to the College of Human Sciences. While some administrative procedures may change, academic programs will continue. Students will continue to belong to the same academic departments.

Q. What majors will be administered by the College of Human Sciences?
A. All of the majors previously associated with the College of Family and Consumer Sciences or the College of Education will continue within the College of Human Sciences.
