Undergraduate Research Travel Support Policy

Consistent with the University goal of encouraging increased undergraduate student involvement in research, the College of Human Sciences will provide some matching travel support for undergraduate students who are presenting research at a research conference. Up to $300 will be provided.

Requirements:

  1. The student must be a major in an undergraduate program in the College of Human Sciences.
  2. The student must be involved in presenting research at a national/international professional conference as a single or co-author. Presentation is interpreted to include any typical form of conference presentation of research (e.g. symposium/interactive symposium; paper discussion/roundtable; poster presentation/structured poster session; traditional verbal-visual paper presentation/short lecture)
  3. In order to maximize the learning experience, the student should be involved in the presentation of the research at the conference.
  4. A tenure-track or tenured professor in the college must sponsor / request funding for the student. Sponsoring the request is assumed to attest to the importance of the student's work and the appropriateness of the conference for presenting this work. The sponsoring professor will assume responsibility that the conditions of this award are carried out.
  5. The college will match an amount (up to $300) provided by grants or funds developed as a results of grants (e.g. PI incentive funds) or provided by the department of the student's major. (Note: this restriction does not prevent grants or the department from providing more than $300.)
  6. Support of the college is to be acknowledged in the presentation, in any materials distributed about the presentation at or subsequent to the conference (e.g. hand-outs, paper copies, etc) and any subsequent publications based on the work on which the student is an author or co-author.
  7. The researchers provide the College with the full citation for the conference presentation, a copy of an up to 200 word abstract, and a photo of the researchers including the student suitable for use in publicizing the research on the College webpage.
  8. The student and any non-university author or co-author provides the College with a publicity release for use of the photo, citation, and abstract.
  9. Copies of any subsequent publications based on the presented research on which the student is a co-author are submitted to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education with an explanatory message indicating the student and conference paper to which the publication is related.
  10. A student can receive this funding for only one conference per academic year. (July 1/June 30).
