WebCT GOLD: Backing up your course
March 24, 2008
After each semester is complete, you should:
- Backup your course,
- Unenroll students.
Course builders can archive their WebCT GOLD accounts and save the backup files to their computers. Note that a backup file cannot be opened up outside of the WebCT environment but it will contain a complete copy of your course at the time it was made.
-
Begin by logging into WebCT and entering your course.
-
Make sure that you are in "Build" view.

-
Click on the "Manage Course" link in the left hand menu.

-
Click the "Backup" link from the list of options. You will see a list of any previous backups that you have created. To create a new archive, click the "Back Up Course" link.

-
Your backup request will be queued. The time to completion depends upon the size of the course and amount of server traffic. When complete, the file is saved on the WebCT server and displays in list of course backups.
-
To download a backup to your computer, click the ActionLink (
) to the right of the backup name and select "Save as File"

-
Now you are asked where to save the file. Click "My Files" or "Class Files". You may change the file name but make sure to leave the .bak file type at the end. Uncheck the tracking feature as it is not useful for archiving purposes. Click "OK".

-
Now click on the "File Manager" in the left had menu. If you saved the backup to "Course Files", you should see it listed amongst the other files for the course. If you saved the backup to My Files, click the "My Files" link at the top of the screen to view that storage area.

-
Pull down the ActionLink (
) to the right of the file name and select "Download". Save the file to your computer.
