Iowa State University
College of Human Sciences

ODEET staff, Karla Embleton and Ann Bugler, are available to:

  • design, develop and maintain class web sites
  • develop/process course content for delivery online or via CD/DVD
  • provide technical assistance to instructors who are doing their own course development
  • provide technical assistance to instructors who are using classroom capture software, specifically Adobe Connect

Instructors who will be teaching online courses should begin the development process a semester in advance. A weekly consultation is recommended, especially if you are not yet experienced with online teaching. Please feel free to call with questions or to set up a meeting.

Instructors who are using a class web site as a supplement to their course are urged to arrange for their site 4-8 weeks before the start of the semester.

Class Web Sites

Class web sites are maintained in either WebCT or the college course portal, "ClassWeb". WebCT courses should have an information page and syllabus on the college site.

The preferred method of submitting material for posting is via email, as an attachment. When your material is processed and posted, ODEET will send you a return email. Content pages can normally be posted within 3 days. If you wish to have an interactive survey or quiz posted, please allow at least a week. When material is posted, you will receive email notification.

Each submission should include the following information:

  • course name, by department and number (e.g., HDFS 102)
  • contact information in case there is a question about how the file should be handled
  • date to which any lesson materials should be linked
  • whether a specific file format is required (e.g., PDF with 2 slides per page)
  • if multiple files are sent, indicate the order in which they should appear

Notes:

  • It is the responsibility of the instructor to obtain any necessary copyright permissions.
  • Material will be posted online "as is" (they will not be edited).

Send class materials for posting to:

Multimedia & Streaming Content

Please contact Ann Bugler about course content development that is more involved - i.e. requires audio recording, screen captures, or live streaming. Longer development times are required.

If you will be using Adobe Connect, Ann can arrange for a Connect meeting space, and assign a student technical assistant.

Ann can also assist with WebCT.

ClassWeb
http://www.hs.iastate.edu/online

ClassWeb is a collection of class web sites for Human Sciences courses. It is organized by semester and rebuilt each semester. Materials are viewable for one year, unless otherwise arranged. Visitors do not need to enter a login or password. Each ClassWeb course site should include instructor contact information and a syllabus, at a minimum.

Two standard course templates are used within Classweb. One is for courses that have most of their materials stored in a WebCT site. This template acts as a redirect yet provides useful public information about the course that is handy for prospective students, students having difficulty accessing WebCT, and student advisors. A more comprehensive course template is used when class materials are housed on the actual ClassWeb site.

WebCT

https://webct.its.iastate.edu

WebCT is a web-based program for developing, delivering and managing online courses and course supplements. WebCT is operated by Iowa State University, not the College. WebCT courses require each user to enter a login and password to access a course. If you will be using WebCT, you should still have an information page in ClassWeb that contains instructor information, a syllabus, and a link to WebCT. Many tip and help sheets for WebCT are available on the College Course Portal.

WebCT accounts must be ordered for each semester a course is taught. The instructor must also upload, or enroll, students into a WebCT course in order for the registered students to access it.

WebCT is used both for fully online courses and as a supplemental web site for face to face classes. It offers many tools for communication, assignment collection, and online surveys and quizzes. Because it is web based, digital content in the form of PowerPoint slide shows, video links, images and audio files can be linked to courses.
