Graduating Human Sciences students to be recognized at celebration on Friday

An outstanding academic leader and several remarkable students will be featured as 390 graduating students are recognized in the College of Human Sciences Graduation Celebration on Friday. The event, which is open to the public, begins at 4:30 p.m. in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. Audience seating begins at 4 p.m. A reception for graduating students, their families and friends, and faculty and staff, in the Scheman building will follow the ceremony.
 
Jerry Thomas, professor and chair of kinesiology, will deliver the keynote address at the College of Human Sciences Graduation Celebration. Thomas’ research focuses on research in motor development, with a special emphasis in cognitive factors and gender differences in the motor skills of children. An author of over 200 research and professional publications, he has served as a visiting scholar at institutions in Australia, Korea, China, Thailand and Hong Kong. Thomas serves as the first president of the recently-organized American Kinesiology Association. He received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity in 2003.
 
Margaret “Maggie” McManemin, graduating senior in dietetics (pre-med), will lead the student procession at the CHS Celebration. As a student-athlete, McManemin has maintained a 3.58 grade point average while lettering on the Iowa State women’s soccer team every year. She has served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Nutrition Club, and the Pre-med Club, and has volunteered in Ames community organizations. She plans to attend medical school and promote nutrition as a means for improving the lives of athletes and preventing disease.
 
Lindsay Wiesner will represent the College of Human Sciences as a marshal at the all-university graduation ceremony. A graduating senior in kinesiology and health in the options of exercise science and human medicine, Wiesner has a 3.87 cumulative grade point average and will graduate Magna cum laude. While attending Iowa State, she has worked with Dr. Ann Smiley-Oyen and Dr. Tim Derrick, studying the motor mechanics of Parkinson’s patients and runners. Outside of the classroom and biomechanics lab, she has served as captain of the Iowa State Swimming Team. She has also been active on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, served as a co-leader in the Freshman Honors Program, traveled on a medical mission trip to Central America, and volunteered at the Special Olympics.
 
Kimberly Kiraly, graduating senior in Family and Consumer Sciences Education, will receive the Dean’s Recognition Award for outstanding academic accomplishment, leadership, and service. Kiraly has established herself as an academic leader while maintaining a 3.75 grade point average. She was named ISU Homecoming Queen in 2007. She has worked as a camp director and counselor in the U.S. Department of Defense’s Camp Adventure, traveling to Spain, Germany and South Korea. She has served as president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, president of Order of Omega (Greek honor society), special events coordinator for Vespers during Greek Week, and Human Sciences senator in the ISU Government of Student Body. Kiraly played on Iowa State’s polo team for two years and served as varsity water polo captain.
 
Dan Determan has been named Graduating Student of the Year by the College of Human Sciences Student Council. Karen Naig, president-elect of the council, will present the award to him at the CHS Graduation Celebration. While at Iowa State, Determan, a graduating senior in hotel, restaurant, and institution management, has been a leader in the ISU Student Alumni Leadership Council, ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors, College of Human Sciences Council, Iowa State University Student Foundation, Cardinal Key Honor Society, and the ISU Meat Judging Team.
 
Dustin Gentry, a graduating senior in liberal studies, will lead the crowd in singing the National Anthem and the Bells of Iowa State at the CHS event.
