Researchers win R&D Awards

Food science and human nutrition scholars are among a team of ten researchers who won a 2009 R&D 100 Award, for their work to use a microscopic fungus to produce biodiesel from plant processing wastes.
 
Led by Hans van Leeuwen, an Iowa State professor of civil, construction, and environmental engineering, the research team includes three food science and human nutrition scholars: Sam Beattie, an assistant professor and ISU Extension food safety specialist; Debjani Mitra, a Ph.D. candidate; Carol Ziel, a research associate.
