ELPS has strong showing at CSCC, AACC conferences

Colleagues recognize excellence from ISU faculty, students

Faculty and students from the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) traveled to Phoenix, Ariz. April 2-7 for the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) and American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) annual conferences. The CSCC is a division of the AACC.

The CSCC conference was an opportunity for ELPS faculty and students to showcase their research in the area of community college education. ISU gave a total of eight presentations at the conference, and individuals were recognized for outstanding scholarly achievement and service to the organization. The AACC conference brought together over 4000 community college leaders, policy makers, and researchers to learn the latest in two-year education initiatives. A team from ELPS had one presentation at the conference.

Larry Ebbers, university professor in ELPS, received the CSCC Senior Scholar Award for his theoretical and applied research contributions to the national body of knowledge about community colleges. Linda Serra Hagedorn, director of the ISU Research Institute for Studies in Education (RISE), along with Andy Ryder, ELPS doctoral student, and Dee Baird, ELPS doctoral candidate, received a $2000 annual research grant from CSCC for their project, “Workforce development in an economic crisis: The Iowa community college response.” ELPS doctoral candidate Julie Huiskamp’s dissertation, “Mandatory Professional Development and Community College Support Staff Personnel” was cited for excellence by the organization. Frankie Santos Laanan, associate professor in ELPS, was named CSCC vice president for research and publications for the upcoming year.
