Lloyds create first endowed chair in ISU's College of Human Sciences

W. Eugene Lloyd and his wife, Linda, appreciate a a textile work that honors Eugene's first wife, the late Noma Scott Lloyd, on Thursday. The piece was presented to Eugene by Robert Bosselman (left), professor and chair of apparel, educational studies and hospitality management, to thank him for a generous donation. ISU President Gregory Geoffroy also thanked the Lloyds for their generous gift, which honors Noma with an endowed chair in textiles and clothing that bears her name.

Ames, Iowa — W. Eugene (Gene) Lloyd and his son, Thomas, have established the first endowed chair in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University. The Noma Scott Lloyd Chair in Textiles and Clothing was created in honor of Gene Lloyd’s late wife and Thomas’ mother, Noma Scott Lloyd, who earned her bachelor’s degree in home economics education in 1949 from Iowa State University.

“We are grateful to Thomas and Dr. Lloyd for this transformational gift to the College of Human Sciences,” said College of Human Sciences Interim Dean Pamela White. “The first endowed chair in textiles and clothing is not only one of the college’s highest priorities but it will help us attract senior-level scholars to Iowa State and continue our track as one of the strongest programs of its kind in the nation.”

As the first endowed faculty chair in the College of Human Sciences, the Noma Scott Lloyd chair will be the first within a textiles and clothing program with a focus on technological applications within the field of apparel.

"in the field of textiles and clothing, there are currently only two universities recognized for their work in the field of technical design. This chair will not only give us prestige within the field, but we hope it will put Iowa State in the top three nationally—with the goal to be ranked at the top in five years,” said Bob Bosselman, professor and chair of the department of apparel, educational studies and hospitality management. “We are actively seeking the best candidate who will lead our efforts in technological applications and research advancements.”

Gene Lloyd earned two degrees from Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine—a doctor of veterinary medicine in 1949 and a doctorate in veterinary pathology in 1970. Gene is a longtime supporter of the university and is also a member of the ISU Foundation’s Executive Campaign Committee.
