ISU program puts professionals in the classroom

"Teaching is who I am," says recent grad

Mike Clough, associate professor in curriculum and instruction and co-director of Iowa State’s Master of Arts in Teaching program in Science Education (MAT), works with students on an instructional exercise.


A Steady Increase
The Iowa State Master of Arts in Teaching program in Science Education has been offered since 2003. Since that time, enrollment has been on a steady incline, with seven students graduating in 2009 and 14 student enrolled for the 2009-10 class.

"Our program prepares those who have a strong background in science and are passionate about teaching to effectively teach science to grade 7-12 students," Joanne Olsen, MAT co-director said. "It is known for its strong pedagogical preparation, content preparation, and time spent in schools student-teaching grade 7-12 students.”
