A dress recognized for outstanding sustainable design at the International Textile and Apparel Association’s recent conference will be on exhibit at Iowa State University as part of a student's thesis show. Ling Zhang, graduate student in the ISU master's of family and consumer sciences program, will open a showing of her apparel designs with a reception on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the Mary Alice Gallery of the Textiles and Clothing Museum in Morrill Hall. The reception is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Zhang and a doctoral student, Yang Yu, received the Award for Sustainable Design from Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business, for their work titled “Fibonacci Number in Apparel Design,” at the ITAA conference earlier this month. The winning work, which they produced in a creative design class taught by Jean Parsons, will be featured as part of the exhibit.
"I used white burlap fabric for the dress and thick cotton yarn for creating a raised embossment on the surface," said Zhang about the Fibonacci garment, made of natural fibers. "The burlap fabric is also an unexpected choice ... in opposition to most elegant dress fabrics," she said.
Zhang's exhibit, “Inspired by…” will be on display in the Mary Alice Gallery of the Textiles and Clothing Museum until Dec. 3. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
