Rebecca Luchtel, a senior in nutritional science from Spirit Lake, presented her research findings on the disease-fighting capacity of egg protein at the Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego, Apr. 4-9, 2008.
Luchtel has been working with egg-white protein since her sophomore year at Iowa State. Through internships, class work and research, Luchtel has developed strong working relationships with her professors that have allowed her many opportunities to further her own research interests.
“I have worked with Kevin Schalinske (associate professor of nutrition) the entire time,” Luchtel said. “I enjoy everything from the design and planning process to the actual lab work. It suits my personality well. Iowa State gives their undergraduates many opportunities to get involved in research and work with faculty on a personal basis.”
At the Experimental Biology conference, Luchtel presented a research poster in a poster competition. Each poster session is divided up by topics, and Luchtel presented with people who have related research interests.
With this research topic, Luchtel said Schalinske designed the study and secured the funding, but had her carry out the actual lab work. Over the summer, Luchtel and Schalinske will be co-writing a paper for publication regarding their findings of egg-white proteins as a treatment strategy to prevent cardiovascular disease.
“My communication skills have improved greatly because of the opportunities I’ve had through my research,” Luchtel said. “Through formal presentations, speaking with others and writing the research papers, it’s been a great way to build those skills.”
When Luchtel graduates in May, she will continue her research work at Iowa State as part of her graduate education. In her graduate work, she is interested in discovering other areas of nutritional sciences and extending her knowledge of research techniques.
In addition to her research work, Luchtel also serves as a teaching assistant and takes graduate classes.
