Linda Serra Hagedorn, director of RISE and professor in educational leadership and policy studies, has been elected president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), the nation's premier scholarly association of higher education researchers. Food Scince and Human Nutrition undergraduate and graduate students Tony Haun, Megan Wiley, Zara Nazareth, Yanjun Liu, Devin Dutilly, Candace Ilg, Janelle Brewer, Huey Shin (Rachel) Gan, and Charlwit Kulchaiyawat, members of the ISU FSHN Product Development Team, competed at the national Institute of Food Technologists Product Development Competition with their beverage FruitSoylicious®. Teske Drake, a doctoral student in human development and family studies, received a top honor at the ISU Graduate Minority Assistantship Program's annual research symposium. Drake received first prize in the social sciences category for her presentation on mothers' experiences with perinatal loss upon confirmation of a lethal prenatal diagnosis. [06/24/09]

Gary Phye, a professor of educational psychology in curriculum and instruction, has been honored for his outstanding, substantial, and sustained research, by the American Educational Research Association. Phye is officially an AERA fellow, having been inducted into the inaugural class of researchers. [06/16/09]
Claiming multiple awards at AAFCS conference
Iowa State’s family and consumer sciences students and student club were recognized with a host of awards, at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference in Knoxville, Tenn. Among those honored were: ISU Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies (Student) Club, Standard of Excellence Award and the Community Service Award; Valarie Betz (MS ’01, PhD ’08), Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Teacher Educators in Higher Education; Jennifer Murnane (PhD ’08), Outstanding Student Research Award from the Family Relations and Human Development Community; Nina Roofe, doctoral candidate, first place in research poster competition, from the Colleges, Universities, and Research Community; Darby Thompson Sewell (PhD 08) named New Achiever; Brooke Weekes (MEd ‘07) named New Achiever; Axton Betz, doctoral candidate, Jewell L. Pamela White, dean of the College of Human Sciences and university professor in food science and human nutrition, has been cited for outstanding research. White, who evaluates oils and fatty acids, received the Stephen S. Change Award for Lipid or Flavor Science, from the Institute of Food Technology. [05/19/09]

Ann Marie Fiore, a professor in apparel, educational studies, and hospitality management, has been named a Fellow of the International Textiles and Apparel Association. Pat Walsh, an academic advisor in human development and family studies, will receive a Champion Award for advancing ISU learning communities. Danielle Sponder, senior in apparel merchandising, design, and production, has been awarded one of four national $25,000 Geoffrey Beene fashion scholarships based on her design and marketing efforts with sustainable fabrics. [01/23/09]

Lori Patton, assistant professor of higher education in educational leadership and policy studies, has received the Mildred Garcia Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education’s Council on Ethic Participation for her work relating to social justice and underrepresented populations of color. Linda Serra Hagedorn, professor and director of RISE, has received the Distinguished Paper Award from the Southeastern Association for Community College Research (SACCR).
