Award

Recognized for outstanding research

Pat Leigh will receive the next Dean's Research Recognition Award for outstanding scholarship. Leigh was selected for her studies on historical injustices and how they influence today's digital divide. She will discuss her work at a luncheon for faculty, graduate students, honors students, and Rosenfeld interns, on Jan. 21. [12/09/08]

 

Leading workforce development

Frankie Santos Laanan, associate professor of higher education, has been selected as president-elect of The Association for Career and Technical Education Research, an organization which advances workforce development. His one-year term as president will begin Nov. 1, 2010. [12/09/08]

 

Earning top honors

John Schuh, a distinguished professor in educational leadership and policy students and an expert on the college student experience and evaluation of universities, has been honored with the most highly prized award in his profession: Schuh has received the Association for the Study of Higher Education’s Research Achievement Award. Exhibiting among the best of the best

Jean Parsons, associate professor in apparel, educational studies, and hospitality management, and five of her students were among a select few whose designs were exhibited at the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) annual meeting in Illinois, Nov. 5-8. ISU designers exhibited five works at the meeting. [11/18/08]

 

Breaking ground with creativity research

Elena Karpova, Sara Marcketti, and Jessica Barker, assistant professors in apparel, education studies, and hospitality management, received a Best Paper Award in the professional development category from the International Textile and Apparel Association. The paper documents their measurement of undergraduate students' growth in creativity resulting from learning activities in an introductory course. [11/13/08]

 

Earning accolades, cash for research

College of Human Sciences students Joel Weiler, senior in nutritional science, Jovin Hasjim, graduate student in food science and technology, and Eric Nonnecke, graduate student in nutritional science, won prizes for posters that highlight their respective research on world food issues at the annual Norman Borlaug Lectureship Poster Competition. Impacting ISU in 2009

Three CHS woman honored on Catt calendar - The next "Women Impacting ISU" calendar will feature three women with College of Human Sciences ties: Emily Jensen, graduate student, educational leadership and policy studies; Julie Larson (MS Education 1984), director of outreach and events, ISU Alumni Association; Suzanne Hendrich, professor, food science and human nutrition. Exceeding Expectations

Steven Smith, a Buena Vista University and Iowa State University educational administration alum (MS '88, CAS '94), and superintendent of Guthrie Center and Adair-Casey schools, has received the BVU's John Fisher Alumni Award. The award recognized Smith for his extraordinary service and exceptional accomplishments in the mid-point of his career. [10/12/08]

 

Leading Iowa educational administration

Brad Buck (M.Ed. PRST '97, Ph.D. ELPS '06) began serving his term as president of the School Administrators of Iowa in the first week of September. The organization's next president is also a CHS alum; Theron Schutte (Ph.D. ELPS '03) is SAI president-elect. [09/08/08]

 

Earning apparel accolades

Sara Marcketti, assistant professor in apparel, educational studies, and hospitality management, will be among those honored at a celebration of the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, on Sep. 18. Marcketti received a faculty award from CEAH in spring 2007, for her examination of design piracy and patents. [09/08/08]

 

Inspiring researchers

Linda Niehm will receive the Rossmann Manatt Faculty Development Award, which is designed to further the scholarship, teaching and service of faculty. Niehm, an associate professor in apparel, educational studies, and hospitality management, studies entrepreneurship. She aspires to create a center for community development. [08/18/08]

 

Demonstrating superb graduate research

Mary Sue Green, HDFS Doctoral Student in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program, has been chosen for the 2008 National Council on Family Relations Student Award. Green was also selected for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Research Award. [07/02/08]

 

Creating a legacy of achievement

Amy Jensen, a senior in hotel, restaurant, and institution management, has received a $2000 DiRoNA Undergraduate Scholarship from the Distinguished Restaurants of North America. This is the second consecutive year that an Iowa State HRI student has received the award. [06/23/08

 

Earning rewards for passionate learning

Diana Baltimore, a doctoral student in human development and family studies, received a $500 Love of Learning grant from Phi Kappa Phi, an all-discipline honor society. The grants are designed to fund post-baccalaureate studies or career development for activities. Only 50 of 667 eligible applicants received the national award. [7/28/2008].

 

Besting hospitality scholars

Bob Bosselman, Haemoon Oh, Ann Marie Fiore, and Miyoung Jeong, professors in apparel, education studies, and hospitality management, will receive honors from the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Education. Bosselman will receive the Howard B. Meek Award. Oh, Fiore, and Jeong will receive the Best Paper of the Year Award. [6/16/2008]

 

Elevating leadership

Jerry Thomas, professor and chair of the department of kinesiology, has been named dean of the College of Education at the University of North Texas in Denton. Thomas will begin his duties at North Texas on Aug. 1. Phillip Martin, from Penn State, will assume ISUs kinesiology chair post on July 1, 2008. [6/13/2008]

 

Inspiring new awards

Corly Brooke, professor of human development and family studies and director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), has been honored by ISU by having an award named after her 10 years of leadership and service to learning communities. The Corly Brooke Learning Community Advocate Award was bestowed to its first recipient, David Acker, associate dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. [6/5/2008]

 

Propelling innovations in learning communities

Darlene Fratzke, student recruitment and retention coordinator in the College of Human Sciences, has been honored with the Outstanding Innovations Award from Iowa State's Learning Communities program. The award recognizes members of the Iowa State community who have made innovative contributions to learning communities. [6/5/2008]

 

Writing commendable papers

Sara Marcketti, assistant professor of apparel, education studies, and hospitality management, was recognized by Emerald Group Publishing and named a Highly Commended Award Winner for her paper, Leading with Relationships: A small firm example. The paper was published in Learning Organization, a journal of business practices. [5/27/2008]

 

Promoting healthier employees

Sally Barclay, clinician in food science and human nutrition and director of the Nutrition Cinic for Employee Wellness, accepted an award from Gov. Chet Culver and Lt. Gov. Patty Judge, on Apr. 30. The leaders recognized Iowa State employees' participation in the Culver/Judge 100 Day Health Challenge. [5/20/2008]

 

Sweeping AAFCS awards

Iowa State's Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies Club received three of the four top awards offered by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences in 2008. AAFCS selected the ISU club to receive the Pioneer Award, named Karina Ostrem Student of the Year, and named Axton Betz Outstanding Advisor. [5/13/2008]

 

Conducting outstanding doctoral research

Michelle Ihmels, doctoral student in kinesiology, has received Iowa States Karas Award for Outstanding Dissertation in the Behavioral Sciences. Ihmels research identifies children who are likely to become obese and then creates interventions to prevent them from gaining unhealthy amounts of weight. [5/9/2008]

 

Demonstrating superlative teaching

Kari Wagner, an EDAD masters students, was named as a KIMT News/Channel 3 Golden Apple Winner during April. The award is given based on recommendations and nominations from students. [4/30/3008]

 

Making substantial contributions to educational research

Gary Phye, a professor of educational psychology in curriculum and instruction, has been named to the inaugural class of fellows of the American Educational Research Association. The honor recognizes Phye for excellent, substantial and sustained contributions to educational research. Phye is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association. [4/30/2008]

Maggie McManemin, a senior in dietetics and pre-medicine, has received the university's top award for students. Along with four other students, McManemin was named a Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior by the ISU Alumni Association. The award recognizes outstanding character, achievement, and promise. [4/29/2008]

 

Improving womens health

The WISEWOMAN group, led by Ruth Litchfield, an assistant professor of food science and human nutrition, and Extension nutrition and health field specialists Patricia Anderson, Nancy Clark, Susan Klein, and Jan Temple, has been nationally recognized by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service for outstanding work to improve the cardiovascular health of women. Earning outstanding fellowships

Jos Cabrales and Jason Pontius, doctoral students in higher education, have been named fellows for a data policy institute to study the databases of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). [4/10/2008]

 

Directing exemplary research

Lester Wilson, professor of food science and human nutrition, was recently named a Fellow of the Institute for Food Technology. This is a high honor recognizing many years of dedication to the disciplines of food science. [3/30/2008]

 

Distinguished work in housing for elderly

Mary Yearns, professor of human development and family studies, has been recognized for improving housing for the elderly. Yearns was presented with the National Institute of Senior Housing's Sid Spector Memorial Award on Mar. 29, at the annual joint National Council on Aging-American Society on Aging conference. Conducting research that informs policy

College of Human Sciences seniors Takiyah Abdulmalik, food science; Rebecca Luchtel, nutritional science; Mileka Scurlock and Lindsay Thompson, kinesiology and health, shared their research with Iowa legislators in a poster session during the "Research at the Capitol" event in Des Moines, held on March 6, 2008. Editing top journals

John Schuh, distinguished professor of educational leadership and policy studies, has been named book review editor for the Review of Higher Education, a journal published by the Association for the Study of Higher Education. [3/4/2008]

 

Meeting needs of Latino/a students

Larry Ebbers, University professor of educational leadership and policy studies, was honored on Mar. 11 with the 2008 Amigo Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Latino Knowledge Community for his work addressing the needs of Latino/a students. [2/20/2008]

 

Advancing wellness through research

Marian Kohut, associate professor of kinesiology, has been honored with the annual Deans Research Recognition Award for her outstanding bodies of research studying influenza immunity among the elderly. [2/20/2008]

 

Garnering exceptional apparel scholarships

Apparel merchandising, design, and production students Allison Ledger, Iman El Khatib, Danielle Sponder, Mandy Meyer, and Fracesca Skwark have received $5000 scholarships, as well as internships and trips to New York, from the Young Mens Apparel Association. [2/12/2008]

 

Advising the U.S. president

Tahira Hira, professor of consumer economics and finance in human development and family studies, has been appointed to the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. Hira and other council members were introduced by President Bush in a ceremony in late January after he signed an executive order establishing the new council. [1/29/2008]

 

Promoting international peace

Siti Fatimah, Anat Rubin, and Farah Yusop have each received $8000 P.E.O. International Peace Scholarships from P.E.O. International in Des Moines. Fatimah is a masters student in foodservice and lodging management from Selavang, Malaysia. Rubin is a masters student in education from Petach-Tikva, Israel. Yusop is a doctoral student in curriculum and instructional technology, from Shah Alam, Malaysia. The scholarship supports international women as they pursue graduate study in the U.S. and Canada.
