October 11 Presentation for Faculty and Staff: New Educational Assessment Tools from ETS. Ned Steinke, a representative from the Educational Testing Service will share information about several newer tools and assessments that ETS is releasing, including Criterion and ICT Literacy assessment. October 13 Lecture: Discourse Analysis and Mathematics Education. David Pimm, professor of mathematics from the University of Alberta, Canada, will talk about the effects of written and oral linguistics on learning and teaching mathematics--especially the notion of time. Thérèse Laferrière, professor of pedagogy at Laval University in Quebec, Canada, will discuss three innovative instructional technology initiatives in Canada and the problems they address. Michael Morris Lecture. Finding Relevance in Entrepreneurship: Applications and Aspirations. Morris is internationally recognized for his writing and teaching on the topic of entrepreneurship. Morris is the Witting Chair in Entrepreneurship and professor and head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises at Syracuse University. His recent books include "Corporate Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurial Development Inside Organizations" (with D. Kuratko) and "Entrepreneurial Intensity: Sustainable Advantage for Individuals, Organizations, and Societies." The entrepreneurship program at Syracuse University has received several national awards. 2007 - September 24 Lecture/Dialogue: The Missing Story of Ourselves – Vivyan Adair, Ph.D., chair of the Elihu Root Peace Fund and associate professor women's studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, will discuss an exhibition of museum-quality color photographs and stories created by parents and/or students who have been poor and whose lives have changed through higher education. The exhibit, "The Missing Story of Ourselves: Poverty and the Promise of Higher Education," is on display through Sept. 28 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Gallery in the Round in Ames. Adair is director of the Access project, a pilot program that assists disadvantaged parents in their efforts to earn college degrees. 2007 - October 15 Borlaug Lecture by Monty Jones: Agricultural Research and Food Security in Africa – Monty Jones is the executive secretary of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, based in Ghana. He received the 2004 World Food Prize for his achievements in creating a new rice variety specifically bred for the ecological and agricultural conditions in Africa. Jones, the first African to win the World Food Prize, has worked to distribute the rice to farmers in Africa's villages in partnership with private and government agencies. Jones was born and educated in Sierra Leone. He is the 2007 Norman Borlaug Lecturer. The prize has been awarded for more than 20 years, but 2007 is the inaugural year for the Iowa Hunger Summit. A high point of the event will be the announcement of the dollar figure representing Iowa's contribution to fighting hunger at home and abroad. 2007 - November 02 Education Summit --The Future of Education: Responding to Uncertainty – Keynote speakers are Jill Conrad, senior consultant for policy and planning, Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning, and Karen Smith, CEO, National Commission on Teaching and America's Future. Examine major educational issues, including nanoscale science, technology, egineering and mathematics (STEM) education, and the role of education in the economy, the environment, social justice, and globalization. Other topics include the shift from the information age to conceptual understanding/creativity/innovation, digital students and analog teachers, the tsunami of retiring teachers, and recruiting and retaining high quality teachers. 2008 - June 28 - July 02 International Conference on Smart homes and health Telematics (ICOST) – "Gerontechnology: Enhancing Quality of Life for Rural Elders" is the theme for the 2008 annual conference, which is being hosted in the U.S. for the first time in its six-year history. Experts will gather to discuss smart homes that use embedded computers, information-based appliances, micro/nano systems, and multi-modal sensors to improve the quality of life for rural elders. Moore is professor and director of clinical education and services, in the speech, language, and hearing sciences department at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Moore studies issues of particular interest to teachers, care providers, and faculty that prepare future professionals and personnel to work in these fields. She addresses the ways families make choices about what languages their children speak at home and at school; how to prepare future teachers and current educators to support and inform this decision-making process and whether these choices should be different for a child with an identified disability; and the long-term cultural consequences of preserving -- or losing -- the languages of one’s heritage. Cortés lecture: How the media teach about diversity – Cortés is the author of "The Children Are Watching: How the Media Teach about Diversity and The Making - and Remaking - of a Multiculturalist." He is creative/cultural advisor for Nickelodeon's award-winning children's television series Dora the Explorer and its sequel, Go, Diego, Go!, as well as coauthor of the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies series and senior consultant for the McDougal Littell World History series. Cortés is a professor emeritus of history at the University of California, Riverside. He also serves on the summer faculty of the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education and on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication. 2009 - March 25 Rossmann Manatt Lecture by Linda Niehm – Linda Niehm, recipient of the 2009 Rossman-Manatt award, has built her career around the concept of integrative research between academia and rural community entrepreneurship. Her lecture will provide an overview of successful research and outreach projects, specifically focusing on a current USDA-NRI grant on community resiliency and recent rural business and community outreach projects in Oskaloosa and Elkader, Iowa. Niehm, who has worked to combine research, teaching, and outreaching into her curriculum, will also share her vision for a College of Human Sciences entrepreneurship center, where students can conceptualize and hone their creative ideas for business, community, and social entrepreneurship ventures. 2009 - March 27 Kinesiology research seminar on dynamic dominance, a model of hemispheric lateralization for motor control – Robert Sainburg, associate professor of kinesiology and neurology and co-director of the graduate program in neuroscience at Penn State University, will discuss recent findings that dominant and nondominant hemispheres of the brain serve different, but complementary roles in controlling unilateral extremity movements. These findings have important implications for distinct motor deficits that result from unilesional sensorimotor stroke. Taken together, his studies of healthy individuals and stroke patients indicate motor lateralization reflects the same type of hemispheric separation of function that has been demonstrated for perceptual, cognitive, and language systems. 2009 - September 23 Why Do They Do That? Lessons Learned from Consumer Finance Research at the Federal Reserve Board – Jeanne Hogarth, 2009-10 Hilton Chair, is a manager for the Federal Reserve Board in Consumer Education and Research, specializing in consumer finance. She will discuss her research on electronic banking, patterns of financial behavior, connections between knowledge and behavior in household financial management, and consumer information disclosure. Her work at the Board involves working with both primary and secondary data and includes both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Most recently, she has been involved in consumer testing of web-based disclosures for financial services. The presentation is scheduled for 3:30-4:30 p.m., 2019 Morrill Hall. 2009 - October 13 Pilot Processes for High-Efficiency and High-Quality Extraction of Cumin Essential Oils – An example of extension research at China Agriculture University – Professor Ni of the College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering at China Agriculture University will be speaking on Tuesday, October 13 at 3:10 pm in 1951 Food Sciences Building, CCUR Theater. Professor Ni serves as the Associate Director of the Center for Fruits and Vegetable Processing (under Ministry of Education). Her research focuses on fruits and vegetable processing, functional foods, extraction and purification of phytochemicals. Professor Ni has supervised various high impact research projects. She has 10 patent application, 3 patents granted, 4 book chapters, and 60 scientific publications.

Corey Drake, associate professor in curriculum and instruction at Iowa State University, will describe a series of current studies related to elementary teachers’ use of mathematics curriculum materials. She will explore the construct of curriculum capacity -- the intersection of teachers, materials, and contexts. She plans to use these studies to develop a proposed trajectory for pre-service teacher learning from and about curriculum materials.
