May 13, 2008Lee: new history narrative needed - "History textbooks are full of facts, events, and dates. ... But history doesn't have to be pure memorization -- it's much more imaginative, more engaging," says Mimi Lee, an assistant professor in curriculum and instruction who wants to reinvent history textbooks so students learn to "think historically." More President Bush recognizes Iowa State alum for excellent teaching - President Bush has recognized the achievements of Andy Mogle, an alum of the family and consumer sciences program who has been named Teacher of the Year for the state of Iowa. Mogle is a culinary arts teacher at Norwalk High. He shared a moment with Bush in the Oval Office as part of his visit to Washington, D.C. More Iowa State dominates national family and consumer sciences awards - Iowa State's Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies Club received three of the four top awards offered by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences in 2008. AAFCS selected the ISU club to receive the Pioneer Award, named Karina Ostrem Student of the Year, and named Axton Betz Outstanding Advisor. More May 9, 2008Ihmels receives ISU's top prize for dissertation in behavioral sciences - A kinesiology graduate has received Iowa State's Karas Award for Outstanding Dissertation in the Behavioral Sciences. Michelle Ihmels won the award for her research that identifies children who are likely to become obese and then creates interventions to prevent them from gaining unhealthy amounts of weight. More May 6, 2008Nearly 400 graduating students to be recognized at Human Sciences events - The College of Human Sciences will recognize 390 students receiving bachelor's degrees at the Graduation Celebration on Friday afternoon on 4:30 in Stephen's Auditorium. A reception for all graduating students, their families and friends will take place betwen the undergraduate and graduate events in Scheman. More Alekel is contact for human clinical studies at NWRC - Researchers interested in conducting human clinical trials at the Nutrition and Wellness Research Center can contact D. The NWRC offers a fitness and metabolism unit for studies of free-living participants as well as equipment and support for data collection and lab analyses. More May 5, 2008Students' entrepreneurial spirit channeled in class, celebrated at showcase - A site for hosting young children's parties was named Best in Show among 23 student-generated business plans presented at the Human Sciences Entrepreneurial Showcase on May 1. The winning team of Andrea Lansing (FCEdS), Jayleen Sperfslage (FCEdS) and Kristina Gage (AMDP) exemplifies students' creative and pragmatic plans. More Scholarship increases mean more money, more awards next year - Chances for Human Sciences students to earn sizable scholarships will increase considerably next year. The number of scholarships offered will increase by 36 percent to 248 awards. Funding will increase by 63% to nearly $430,000 -- thanks to generous donors and college leaders' desires to minimize student's debt loads. More Registration deadline draws near for Chinese language summer short course for high school students - High school students who want to learn the Chinese language have until May 16 to sign up for a one-week course offered by Iowa State University's National K-12 Foreign Language Resources Center. Taught by a native speaker of Chinese, the course meets daily beginning Monday, June 23, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. More Researchers build measures of development in babies with disabilities - Gayle Luze and Kere Hughes, assistant professors in human development and family studies, are designing ways to measure the growth and development of very young children with disabilities. Their research team is coaching other specialists as they "play" with each child to "elicit the behaviors we're looking for," said Luze. More Alum's moves will play on the big screen - Ever since she danced with Iowa State groups, Alum Kati Anderson has been choreographing dance moves. Soon the Ankeny English and drama teacher's moves will be seen in movie theaters. More Fall convocation set for Aug. 21 - Mark your calendar for the fall convocation for faculty and staff. The event is set for Thursday, Aug. 21, and will run from 8 a.m. until noon. The location will be announced later. Families Extension group receives award for improving women's health - An Iowa State University Families Extension team has been nationally recognized for outstanding work to improve the cardiovascular health of women. Led by Ruth Litchfield, an assistant professor in food science and human nutrition, Patricia Anderson, Nancy Clark, Susan Klein, and Jan Temple coordinated WISEWOMAN efforts. More McManemin named All-University Senior - Maggie McManemin, a senior in dietetics and pre-medicine, has received the university's top award for students. Along with four other students, McManemin was named a Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior by the ISU Alumni Association. The award recognizes outstanding character, achievement, and promise. More Undergrad presents disease-fighting research at Experimental Biology Conference - Rebecca Luchtel, a senior in nutritional science, recently presented her research at the Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego. With Kevin Schalinske, an associate professor in food science and human nutrition, Luchtel studies egg-white proteins and their potential for fighting cardiovascular disease. More April 28, 2008Behind the Scenes event hosts 400 prospective AMDP students - Four hundred high school students participated in Behind the Scenes Day on Thursday, which provides "a chance for prospective students to take a second look at the apparel merchandising, design and production program. A short program will begin at 3 p.m. Thomas has served as professor and chair of kinesiology since he joined the Iowa State faculty in 1998. The event is open to the public. Brooke named interim chair of human development and family studies - Corly Brooke, professor in human developement and family studies, has been named interim chair of the department. Brooke has served as director of Iowa State's Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching since 1998 and as co-director of learning communities since 2001. She will retire from those positions on June 30. Since joining the faculty as an assistant professor in apparel, educational studies, and hospitality management, Hurst has refined classes in brand management promotion and retail information analaysis for AMDP students. More Summer openings at lab school - The Child Development Laboratory School has summer openings for children that are two-, three-, or four-years-old. Each classroom of this nationally accredited program is staffed by two licensed early childhood teachers and serves as a model care and education program for college students and the community. More April 16, 2008Applications for ISU ADVANCE fellowship due May 6 - The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and the ISU ADVANCE Program is seeking applications for an administrative fellow who will work to enhance the university's programs on work-life balance and flexible faculty careers, particularly for faculty in STEM fields, next year. Applications are due May 6. More Correction - José Cabrales was incorrectly identified in an announcement last week. Cabrales and Jason Pontius have been named fellows for a data policy institute to study the databases of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). STEM education publication takes root - A publication that highlights the college's leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education was launched this year. Each issue of "Another Advancement in STEM Education" features an improvement in areas like measuring student progress in algebra or increasing interest in science careers.
