Abstract

This proposal requests funding for one year to convert the four-credit Textile Science I course (TC 204) to an online class and to promote it to faculty who teach textiles and clothing and interior design courses in the U.S. and other English speaking countries. The funding is requested to verify current content, update links, and transfer maintenance and technical support to a third party publisher while the Principal Investigators maintain authorship and content control of the lecture and lab material.

Students at other institutions would enroll in the class through Continuing and Distance Education (CDE). They would pay tuition to Iowa State University and pay a fee to access the web-site to use the online course materials. The website would be used to share information with individuals enrolled in the class, evaluate their mastery of the content through exams and quizzes and guide their understanding through on-line laboratory modules.

Because of the universal concepts and visual aspects of textile science, the online version would be available to anyone anywhere anytime. The proposed project is entrepreneurial in its creativity and makes use of contemporary technology and educational approaches while providing the opportunity to develop and grow as technologies change.
