Abstract

This initiative seeks to improve financial education for Iowa State University students, create career opportunities for Family Finance, Housing, and Policy (FFHP) majors, and expand the reach of the Financial Counseling Clinic (FCC) in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. The first goal of this proposal is to develop two courses for credit to provide in-depth study on personal financial issues for Iowa State undergraduate students outside of the FFHP major. One course will be designed for freshman and sophomores and will cover basic personal finance (HDFS 183); the second course is planned for seniors and will cover personal financial planning as they approach commencement (HDFS 493). In addition, the proposed innovation initiative will also create a change in FFHP internship requirements and coordination.

The proposal expands current services of the FCC by offering, for credit and in greater depth, learning experiences currently facilitated by the FCC and expands the opportunities for ISU students to take financial literacy courses.
