Behind the Scenes Day

Behind the Scenes Day is designed to provide you an in-depth look at the Apparel Merchandising, Design, and Production major in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University and the career opportunities that major offers.

Incoming students will have the opportunity to learn about textile and apparel design, merchandising production and historic collections during min-presentations throughout the day. Additionally, students will be able to meet with admission counselors, faculty, and attend a dress rehearsal of the Textiles and Clothing Fashion Show and Design Competition.

There is a charge of $10 to attend the Behind the Scenes program and dress rehearsal.  Fees must be paid at the time of check-in. Groups may arrive at 12:30 p.m. for the afternoon and evening sessions only. Additional information will be provided in the registration confirmation letter.

Activities:

Where do your clothes come from? How do they start? How are they produced and marketed? How do clothes today compare with clothes of the 1960s? In these mini-presentations you will learn more about textile and apparel design, merchandising, production, and historic collections.

 

  1. Computer Aided Design (CAD)
    Computers are the future for the fast and fantastic world of apparel design. Unleash your creativity with computers and explore CAD possibilities.
  2. Fashion - Concept to Runway
    See the exciting evolution of creativity
  3. The Wonders of Textiles
    Explore the exciting world of textiles. Investigate the ways textiles are made and why they appeal to consumers. Examine textiles at the microscopic level!
  4. Clothing and Your Family Tree
    See what your parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents wore-- the "hot" fashions of the 20th century. From paper dresses to Olympic uniforms to high-buttoned shoes, the Costume and Textile Collection has it all!
  5. Merchandise Planning - Stocking your Store
    Take part in a process of selecting styles that would be stocked in a store. Learn about basic concerns that need to be considered in the process.
  6. Fashion Illustration
    Begin the design process as you pick up a pencil and practice sketching and illustration. Erasers will be furnished!
  7. Patternmaking
    Learn the process of making a pattern using the draping and flat pattern methods.
