Those students who wish to participate in the College of Human Sciences Convocation but do not graduate during the current term should submit an early participation request (PDF). Requests will be accepted until Friday, April 14, 2017 for the spring convocation.

Dress for students: Honor Cords, Honors Program Medallions, Honor Society Cords, Stoles, etc. are reserved for official graduation regalia and can be worn proudly during the ISU Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, May 6. Professional Business Attire is required for the CHS Convocation on Friday, May 5.
Purpose: To recognize all students graduating from the college, and those receiving special college awards
The College of Human Sciences Convocation is a separate event from the official Iowa State University commencement ceremony. This event includes only students from the College of Human Sciences, and allows students and their guests a more individualized celebration of their achievement. Diploma covers are not presented at the college event; the covers are presented at the University commencement ceremony.
Dress for participating students: Students participating in the College of Human Sciences Convocation are asked to wear business professional attire. No graduation gowns and caps will be worn by students at the college convocation. Wearing of graduation gowns and caps and honor cords is reserved for the official all-University commencement ceremony.
The Spring 2017 College of Human Sciences Convocation will be held in Hilton Coliseum on Friday, May 5, 2017. Seating is unlimited and tickets are not required for admission. Attendance is optional.
The College of Human Sciences Convocation will begin promptly at 2 p.m. and last approximately 60 minutes with doors opening to the public at 1 p.m.
The Convocation will include greetings from the Dean of the College, comments by a student speaker, and individual recognition of each graduating student who is in attendance. At the conclusion of the recognition of student award recipients, students will cross the stage as their names are read and be recognized by the Dean and the chair or director of their respective academic department or school.
Invitations will be emailed in March to students at their University email addresses on file with the Office of the Registrar. Families will receive a personal invitation at the permanent addresses on file with the Registrar’s Office. Students who plan to attend the convocation are asked to RSVP on their ISU AccessPlus account by Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Professional Business Attire
Professional business attire is required for the CHS Convocation on Friday, May 5.
Caps and gowns will not to be worn in the College of Human Sciences Convocation. Caps and gowns are required for the University Commencement ceremony.

In order for a student to sign up to attend the College of Human Sciences Convocation, students should login in to AccessPlus. Click on the “student” tab, select “graduation,” and then select “diploma/ceremony”. Complete all of the required fields. The College of Human Sciences Convocation RSVP deadline is April 26, 2017.
Arriving at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium
Students will need to plan to arrive at Hilton Coliseum by 12:30 p.m. Please check in at the west entrance of the ground level of Hilton to pick up your reader card. Please plan enough time to complete your reader card with your mailing address and email address. You will be instructed where to line up; signs will be posted according to major. Leave coats, purses, and other valuables with family or friends.

Crossing the Stage
The most important part of the convocation is the individual recognition of graduates. Only the names of students who are present will be read. Recognition will be grouped by major. If you have multiple majors or will earn multiple degrees, you will be recognized only once. Marshals will lead the graduates to the foot of the stage. The graduates will present their reader cards to the reader and each graduate will cross the stage to be recognized by the Dean and the graduate’s respective department chair or school director, as the graduate’s name is read. Students will return to their seats after crossing the stage.
Diplomas will not be handed out at the CHS Convocation, but rather can be:
Picked up by the graduate in 210 Enrollment Services or
Mailed to the student 2-3 weeks after graduation.

Flash Photography will take a photo of each graduate as she/he crosses the stage and is greeted by the Dean. Within one week of the ceremony, graduates will receive electronic proofs. Graduating students may order photos using an online ordering system. However, you are under no obligation to order any photos.

Graduates, families, and friends are invited to a reception (beginning at approximately 3:15 p.m.) in the Scheman Building, First Floor Lobby. The reception is a good time to visit with family, friends, and faculty and to take small group photographs.

Approximately one month before graduation, specifics regarding the University ceremony will be emailed to all students at their email address on file with the Office of the Registrar. The email will direct graduating students to AccessPlus where they will be asked to provide information about attendance at the university ceremony and a diploma mailing address. Ceremony instructions and a graduation checklist will also be posted on the graduation website. If a student does not receive this information, he or she should contact the Graduation Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 515-294-9372.
Iowa State University Alumni Association (ISUAA) Commencement Reception
ISUAA invites graduates and guests to a post-commencement reception at the ISU Alumni Center. This event is open to everyone, regardless of alumni or ISUAA member status and is free of charge for all graduates and their guests. Cake, punch, and coffee will be served. For information about lodging, contact the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-800-288-7470, or go to www.visitames.com. We recommend that you make hotel reservations well in advance, as hotels are usually booked on graduation weekend.
Most restaurants in Ames operate on a first-come-first-served basis during graduation weekend and are usually very busy.
Students who do not plan to attend the university ceremony should stop by the ISU Graduation Office to pick up a diploma cover.
Diplomas will be mailed about three weeks following the ceremony to the address that students were asked to provide on AccessPlus.
