Mid-Career Achievement in Research Award

Objective: To recognize faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in research and/or creative activity at the mid-career stage.

Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty member with a professional research career since PhD (or other appropriate terminal degree) of 8 to 15 years and at least two years of employment in Iowa State University’s College of Human Sciences. Typically, candidates will be in the rank of associate professor in or in their early years as full professor. Distinguished professors are not eligible for this award.

Amount of Award: $500

Number of Awards: One per year, although the College of Human Sciences Honors and Awards Committee reserves the right to not select any recipient in a given year.

Criteria: Documented evidence of exemplary research/creative accomplishments and impact of their work on their discipline as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Significant national and international recognition in the academic community. Evidence of a positive impact of their mentorship and/or teaching on undergraduate students, graduate students and/or postdoctoral associates. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since their terminal degree.

  1. Cover page.
  2. Table of Contents.
  3. Nomination form.
  4. Statement of no more than three pages, signed by an individual with a reputation for prestigious research, describing why this person deserves the award for which he or she is being nominated. The purpose of this statement is to persuade those reviewing the nomination that this candidate is deserving of the award. If relevant, cite specific examples of for each of the following, wherever possible:
    1. Relevant exemplary research/creative accomplishments
    2. Publications
    3. Recognition and impact on the nominee’s field
  5. The nominee’s current curriculum vitae.
  6. If relevant, include a list of current or former students with information about their current employment or other research activities.
  7. Include at least one statement from the nominee’s colleagues who are in a position to comment on his or her research. Ideally, these colleagues should have national/international reputations for excellence in research. Each statement should be in letter form on relevant letterhead and signed by the corresponding colleague.
  8. Include at least one statement from an expert in the nominee’s fields at other institutions who are knowledgeable about the nominee’s work and how it has been evaluated by peers. Again, ideally, these colleagues should have national/international reputations for excellence in research. Each statement should be in letter form on relevant letterhead and signed by the corresponding colleague.
